The National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) has indicated a shift towards a green tariff band for electricity bills throughout the year, attributed to favorable weather conditions. Currently, in January, the tariff is already marked as green due to a decline in energy costs linked to improved generation conditions during the rainy season in Brazil.
Following a historic drought in the latter half of 2024, Aneel had previously activated the red tariff band for the first time in over three years in September. Sandoval Feitosa, the agency's director-general, noted that while a significant dry spell could potentially trigger a shift to a yellow or red tariff band, the overall outlook for 2025 remains positive. He stated that while fluctuations between the yellow and red bands may occur during dry periods, the expectation is for a stable and predictable tariff environment throughout the year.
The tariff flag system, introduced in 2015, was designed to inform consumers about the costs associated with energy generation prior to annual tariff adjustments, thereby mitigating additional financial burdens through interest accumulation over time. Under the green band, consumers face no extra charges. Conversely, the yellow band incurs an additional fee of R$ 1.885 for every 100 kilowatt-hours (kWh) consumed, while the red bands involve significantly higher charges: R$ 4.463 for red band 1 and R$ 7.877 for red band 2 for every 100 kWh used.
In addition to these tariff updates, Feitosa mentioned that Aneel is closely monitoring Enel São Paulo's performance, especially following a blackout incident that affected millions of consumers. The agency, in collaboration with the São Paulo State Public Services Regulatory Agency (Arcesp), is actively reviewing performance metrics and compliance with an official notice issued last October. Feitosa highlighted that the ongoing assessment is critical for determining the distributor's accountability and operational standards moving forward.
Overall, with the current shift towards a green tariff band and ongoing evaluations of energy providers, consumers can anticipate a year of greater stability and lower costs in electricity consumption.
