The Chinese government has announced a series of measures aimed at enhancing the activity in its stock market. On January 23, 2025, regulatory bodies outlined plans to channel more capital into the shares of domestic companies, marking a significant initiative to strengthen market confidence.
Insurance companies and mutual funds are expected to play a pivotal role in this effort, as per a statement released by the China Securities Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Finance. The regulatory framework encourages state-owned insurance firms to allocate 30% of their annual premiums to investments in stocks traded in yuan.
In a pilot program set to launch in the first half of this year, it is anticipated that at least 100 billion yuan (approximately $13.75 billion) of insurance funds will be invested in the stock market. Notably, half of this amount is expected to be approved before the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, which falls between January 28 and February 4.
The announcement of these supportive measures had an immediate positive impact on the stock market, with the Shanghai Composite Index rising by 1.2%. Stocks of China Pacific Insurance experienced a notable increase of 3.6% following the news.
In addition to these measures from the regulatory agencies, the People's Bank of China (PBoC) also revealed plans to further support the stock market. During a press briefing on the same day, the central bank indicated that it would continue to relax loan requirements for companies aiming to repurchase their shares. Furthermore, the PBoC plans to expand liquidity tools to facilitate share buybacks at appropriate times.
This coordinated effort from both regulatory and financial institutions reflects China's commitment to stabilizing and invigorating its financial markets in light of ongoing economic challenges. The proactive stance is expected to bolster investor sentiment and encourage greater participation in the stock market.
