European stock markets displayed mixed performance on the morning of January 24, as investors processed corporate news, local activity indicators (PMIs), and recent comments from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding tariffs. Around 7:20 AM (Brasilia time), the pan-European Stoxx 600 index saw a slight increase of 0.19%, reaching 531.36 points.
In individual stock movements, Burberry shares surged nearly 11% in London following the luxury brand's announcement of better-than-expected quarterly revenue figures, positively impacting other luxury companies, including Moncler, which rose by 5.3% in Milan, and Christian Dior, which increased by 2.6% in Paris.
Conversely, in the Italian banking sector, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena experienced a decline of 5% after it revealed a EUR13.3 billion offer to acquire rival Mediobanca Banca di Credito Finanziario, which saw its shares rise over 6% in response.
On the macroeconomic front, preliminary PMIs for January revealed positive surprises for Germany and the United Kingdom, while the eurozone data presented a mixed picture, indicating gains in the industrial sector but a more significant than anticipated decline in services.
European investors are also reacting to Trump's recent remarks on potential tariffs. In an interview with Fox News, the newly inaugurated president expressed a preference against imposing tariffs on Chinese goods, a statement that contributed to a rally in most Asian markets that morning, along with a boost to the Chinese yuan.
As of 7:36 AM (Brasilia time), the Paris stock exchange was up 0.90%, while Frankfurt saw a rise of 0.38%; however, London was down by 0.34%. Milan's market reported an increase of 0.79%, Madrid fell by 0.27%, and Lisbon remained relatively stable.
The fluctuations in the European markets reflect a complex interplay of local economic data and international political commentary, illustrating the ongoing influence of U.S. policy on global financial sentiment.
