Donald Trump's Inauguration to Take Place Inside the Capitol for the Second Time in History

Mon 20th Jan, 2025

The inauguration ceremony for Donald Trump is set to occur within the Rotunda of the United States Capitol, marking a significant event as it is moved indoors due to dangerously low temperatures. This will be only the second time in history that the presidential oath is administered at this specific location, with the first instance being during Ronald Reagan's second inauguration in 1985.

Traditionally, presidential inaugurations have taken place at various venues, totaling 75 occasions across different locations. Notably, all four inaugurations of Barack Obama occurred on the steps of the Capitol in 2009 and 2013, showcasing the importance of this historic site.

In preparation for the ceremony, which is scheduled for January 20, extensive arrangements are underway inside the Capitol. The decision to hold the event indoors reflects a necessary adjustment to ensure the safety and comfort of attendees amidst the winter weather.

Historically, the presidential oath has been performed in several notable venues:

  • U.S. Capitol: The most frequent location, hosting the ceremony 57 times, predominantly at the East Portico, which has seen 34 inaugurations.
  • Old Brick Capitol: Located where the current Supreme Court stands, this venue was used when James Monroe took the oath in 1817 while the Capitol was under reconstruction.
  • White House: The oath has been administered eight times in the White House, with two instances in the East Room.
  • Outside Washington, D.C.: There have been seven occasions where presidents were inaugurated in other cities, including New York and Philadelphia, with notable instances following the deaths of their predecessors.

As preparations continue, anticipation grows regarding the dignitaries and guests who will attend the ceremony. The shift to an indoor venue not only alters the logistics of the event but also sets the stage for a unique and memorable inauguration.

As Donald Trump prepares to take the oath of office for a second time, the event is expected to draw significant attention both nationally and internationally, reflecting on the evolving political landscape of the United States.
