Belo Horizonte Mayor Fuad Noman Takes Medical Leave Due to Pneumonia

Sun 5th Jan, 2025

The Mayor of Belo Horizonte, Fuad Noman, has been granted a 15-day medical leave starting January 4, 2025, due to pneumonia. His condition necessitated hospitalization, and he is currently receiving treatment at the Mater Dei Hospital.

Following his admission to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for acute respiratory failure, Noman's absence from office will be filled by Vice Mayor Álvaro Damião, who will assume temporary leadership of the city.

According to a statement from the Belo Horizonte City Hall, the medical leave is based on the recommendations of Dr. Enaldo Melo de Lima, the physician overseeing Noman's care. The mayor was admitted to the hospital following a sudden deterioration in his health, which was primarily attributed to pneumonia.

As of the latest medical update, Noman has shown some improvement in his vital signs and respiratory function, although he remains under sedation and requires mechanical ventilation. Medical professionals have indicated that while his condition is stabilizing, there is currently no timeline for his discharge from the ICU.

In a formal announcement, the city administration confirmed Noman's medical leave and highlighted the importance of his recovery. Damião, stepping in as acting mayor, will take on the responsibilities of the mayor's office during this period.

This situation underscores the ongoing health challenges faced by public officials, particularly in the context of their demanding roles within local governance.

The community and officials alike have expressed their hopes for a swift recovery for Mayor Noman, emphasizing the significance of stable leadership in these critical times.
