Federal and District Police Investigate Threats Against Lula and Moraes Involving Explosives
The Federal Police and the Civil Police of the Federal District are currently investigating serious threats against President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes. Preliminary reports indicate that a potential attack is planned for this month, utilizing explosives, grenades, and a Barrett sniper rifle capable of targeting helicopters.
Authorities emphasize that any threats of this nature are treated with the utmost seriousness. Investigators are actively working to uncover the identities of the individuals behind these threats, as well as their methods and the extent of their plans.
This investigation was initiated approximately a week ago and is being managed under strict confidentiality by the newly established Division for the Protection and Combat of Violent Extremism (Dpcev) within the Civil Police of the Federal District, alongside the Police Intelligence Division (DIP) of the Federal Police.
In recent developments, a 30-year-old individual was arrested in Bahia during the last week of December 2024 on suspicions of planning attacks in Brasília. His arrest occurred after a police helicopter intercepted the vehicle he was traveling in. The investigation commenced following anonymous tips, leading to his monitoring, temporary detention, and the pursuit of additional judicial measures.
Moreover, another incident in the same timeframe involved a suspect who parked a car at the headquarters of the Military Police Command in Brasília and claimed to possess devices capable of detonating the premises of both the Military Police and the Federal Police.
Previously, in November, a suicide bomber detonated explosives outside the Supreme Court, reportedly with intentions to assassinate Minister Moraes. Witness accounts provided to the Federal Police indicated that this individual had a clear plan to carry out such an attack.
The CNN news outlet has reached out to the Communications Office of the Presidency as well as the Supreme Court's advisory team but has not received any responses regarding this ongoing situation.
