A recent survey conducted by the Paraná Pesquisas Institute indicates that a significant majority of Brazilians believe that prices for grocery items have risen since President Lula resumed office. The study, which included responses from 2,018 voters across 26 states and the Federal District between January 7 and 10, 2025, found that 65.7% of respondents perceive an increase in prices.
This figure marks a notable rise in sentiment compared to January 2024, when only 48.4% of participants expressed a similar belief. In the latest survey, 20.6% of respondents felt that prices had remained stable, while 11.6% believed that prices had decreased. The remaining 2.1% were uncertain or did not provide an opinion.
The survey's design included a specific question aimed at gauging public perception of price trends since Lula's return to governance: "Based on your knowledge or observations, have supermarket prices increased, decreased, or remained the same since President Lula resumed his role?"
The perception of declining prices has significantly diminished over the past year. In January 2024, 27.1% of respondents believed that grocery prices had fallen, while this year's survey shows a substantial drop to 11.6%. Similarly, the percentage of those who thought prices remained unchanged has also decreased from 22.1% in January 2024 to 20.6% in the current survey.
This survey's findings come at a time when inflation and economic issues are prominent concerns for the Brazilian public. The data reflects a growing unease regarding the cost of living under the current administration, as citizens navigate the challenges of rising prices in everyday necessities.
The methodology of the survey included a representative sample, ensuring a margin of error of 2.2 percentage points and a confidence level of 95%. This statistical reliability adds weight to the perceptions expressed by the participants.
As the government continues to address economic policies, the implications of public sentiment on inflation and cost of living will be crucial in shaping future political discourse and decision-making.
